Kim and Falconier: Promoting healthy couple relationships

Jinhee Kim, Family Science

Dr. Mariana Falconier and Dr. Jinhee Kim will spearhead a project titled, "Together: A Couples’ Model to Enhance Relationships and Economic Stability." The project aims to promote healthy relationships and economic stability among couples from low-income groups.

Given this objective, the project will recruit 360 couples from Northern Virginia and Montgomery County, Maryland. Community agencies will also participate in project implementation, and each couple will be assigned its own case manager to evaluate their needs and set specific goals. The project will recruit another 360 couples as part of a randomized control trial to test whether interventions are effective.

Dr. Falconier, an alumna of the University of Maryland and Associate Professor at Virginia Tech, has received a $7.2 million grant from the federal Office of Family Assistance, Administration of Children and Families for the project. This work is an extension of Dr. Falconier's prior research on how couples cope with marital and economic stress. Dr. Kim, Associate Professor at the University of Maryland, will be the associate director for the project. This research complements Dr. Kim's previous work on family behaviors and processes.
