9:15 - 10:15		Opportunities for investment in inftrastructure for the social sciences and the observatory model Presenter : SBE Assistant Director Myron Gutmann, followed by general discussion
10:15 - 10:45		Background on existing physical sciences observatories (e.g. LTERs, NEON, HERO, RAVON, WATERS) Presenter : Emilio Moran

11:00 - 12:30		Open Discussion Led by Ted Gragson and Morgan Grove What would be the potential benefit of a network of social observatories attached to existing physical observatories ? What questions might drive them ? How might they be attached to the existing observatories ?

1:30 - 2:00		Background on availability and usefulness of information collected in existing national surveys (e.g. PSID, HRS, ANES, GSS) Presenter : Katharine Abraham Strengths and limitations of these surveys for interdisciplinary research, strengths and limitations of the contextual information available to analysts working with these data.
2:00 - 3:30		Open Discussion Led by Barbara Entwisle and Michael Goodchild What benefits might be derived from building an independent network of "social observatories" ? What questions would such a network help us address that cannot be addressed - or cannot be addressed as effectively - with data collected in more traditional ways or y building on the existing physical observatories ?

3:45 - 5:15		Open Discussion Led by Charlie Brown and Bonnie McCay What is the appropriate "division of labor" between large national surveys and the proposed social observatories for addressing key social science research questions ? How might the data infrastructure for social science research best be designed to meet social science research needs and the broader national need for social science input ?

9:15 - 10:30		Open Discussion Led by Peter Dodds and Jane Menken Assuming that a network of "social observatories" were to be developed, either in conjunction with the existing or planned physical observatories or independently, what data would need to be collected as part of these observatories in order to realize their benefits ? What sources might be drawn upon to provide these data ?

10:45 - 12:15		Open Discussion Led by Douglas Massey and Brent Yarnal How should the sites for a network of "social observatories" be chosen ? What rigourous criteria might be applied to their selection ?
