Sonalde Desai featured in The Indian Express on Social Distancing Practice during COVID-19 Lockdown in India

Telephone survey shows high understanding of social distancing, support for lockdown

Faculty Associate Sonalde Desai, Professor from the University of Maryland Department of Sociology also director at NCAER National Data Innovation Centre, along with Santanu Pramanik deputy director at NCAER National Data Innovation Centre, just published a report on The Indian Express detailing the survey results extracted from the Delhi National Capital Region Coronavirus Telephone Survey (DCVTS), completed by the National Council of Applied Economic Research (NCAER).

According to Desai & Pramanik, "between April 3 and April 6, 2020, about 1,750 households from this larger study were surveyed in a telephone interview about their understanding of symptoms and transmission of the novel coronavirus as well as their experience of the lockdown.''

Survey results indicate that: 1) all have heard of the coronavirus and 95% thinks it's dangerous, most can distinguish the symptoms; 2) the lockdown resulted in a substantial reduction in income in the preceding two weeks; 3)29% respondents reported shortages in accessing essential living products such as food and fuel; 4) 85% noted obeying forms of social distancing and 50% have been followed the stay-at-home order strictly.
