Philip Cohen featured in The Hill on Domestic Violence During COVID-19 Quarantine

Police departments across the country are reporting a spike in domestic violence cases as stay-at-home orders put victims and their abusers in constant proximity.

Rachel Bucchino, a reporter writing for The Hill, just published an article on the rising domestic violence amid the stay-at-home order because of the COVID-19 pandemic outbreak, while domestic violence experts speculate cases are still underreported as victims cannot get away from the house to report to police.

Faculty Associate Philip Cohen comments on such issue saying the pandemic has contributed to the stress conditions that can increase the domestic violence: "Not only are many people confined to their homes, but they are also experiencing stressors that are known to increase the risk of violence, especially job loss and health problems." To make things worse, Cohen agrees that cases may be underreported as "people at risk of abuse might not have access to the supports and services they might normally have been able to take advantage of."
