About the Presentation
Using five years of administrative data (2010-2015) from two adjoining school districts in the Baltimore area, we build a network of elementary schools where the ties are formed by student mobility. We then community detection algorithms and gravity models to treat school transfer as a complex, two-stage decision process. Relative academic performance and socioeconomic differences matter substantially more in the models that take the segmented landscape into account than in the naïve models.
About the Speaker

Her research combines the sociology of education and urban sociology to study the roots of educational inequality and examine the dynamic connections between communities and schools that shape opportunities to learn.
