Experts believe the COVID-19 pandemic will not result in a rise in the American birthrate

Allison Slater Tate, a freelance writer and editor writing for Today, just published an article discussing whether there will be a baby boom because of the COVID-19 stay-at-home order when the pandemic is over.

Faculty Associate Melissa Kearney argues that the birth rate is "pro-cyclical," meaning that "when unemployment is low and wages are high, the number of babies born will go up." Therefore, with the pandemic causing high economic shock and job loss, it is much less likely that birth rate will go up afterward, as the economy still needs a much longer time to recover.
