Sangeetha Madhavan's Research on Mothers' Mental Health featured in New Security Beat

range of life experiences conspire to affect a woman’s mental health in Nairobi, Kenya

Faculty Associate Sangeetha Madhavan, Professor of African American Studies at University of Maryland, just published a research article on New Security Beat as a guest contributor on how mothers' mental health in Nairobi, Kenya are affected by different life stressors. This research article is part of the Maternal Health Initiative’s CODE BLUE series, developed in partnership with EMD Serono, a business of Merck KGaA, Darmstadt, Germany.

Madhavan wrote that, while the hard work of establishing trust with a partner, gaining respect from kin, and securing financial support can be quite stressful, another interesting finding is that those women who enjoy high levels of emotional support from men report lower stress, even with very low levels of financial support.
