Steinberg study contradicts long-standing 'link' between abortion and suicide

Equivalent risk before and after abortion

Elizabeth Hlavinka, staff writer for the MedPage Today, published an article explaining how the correlation between women abortion and suicide may not be casual, and thus policies requiring doctors to tell patients about mental health risks associated with abortion may be misinformed.

The article cited from Faculty Associate Julia Steinberg recently published study on the association between first abortion and first-time non-fatal suicide attempt in The Lancet Psychiatry. "Because the risk was the same before and after the abortion, relative to women who did not have an abortion, the abortion cannot be the reason for the increased risk of suicide attempts," Steinberg told MedPage Today in an email. "That is, abortion did not cause or increase women's risk of suicide attempts."
