People with disabilities less likely to get married
Philip Cohen finds rate of marriage for people with disabilities is half the national rate
People with disabilities, and women in particular, face more obstacles than healthy people in finding suitable partners to date and marry. Faculty associate Philip Cohen finds that while the overall first-marriage rate for people between ages 18 and 49 in the United States is 48.9 per 1000, it is 24.4 per 1000 for people with disabilities. In addition to lower rates of first marriage, people with disabilities may suffer greater emotional and physical abuse when in relationships, and are less likely to report abuse after it takes place.
