The Role of Fathers in the Transition to Adulthood for Young Men in Urban South Africa

Sangeetha Madhavan, African American Studies Department

I would like to examine how young men’s relationship to their fathers over the life course influences their transition to adulthood in urban South Africa. Using data from the Birth to Twenty Cohort Study in Johannesburg, South Africa and qualitative interviews with a sample of young men, I propose to use multiple methods to examine how life course relationships with fathers influence young men’s decisions about schooling, employment, union formation and childbearing as well as selected health outcomes.
