Sonalde Desai appointed to National Academy Committee on Population

Prestigious appointment follows years of research

Faculty Associate and Distinguished University Professor Sonalde Desai has been appointed to the Committee on Population of the National Academies of Science, Engineering, and Medicine.

Dr. Desai’s research portfolio includes the third iteration of the India Human Development Survey, the first-ever nationwide longitudinal survey of Indian households. In collaboration with National Council of Applied Economic Research in New Delhi, the multi-sectoral survey of over 40,000 households across India provides a rich resource for research on the relationship between poverty, gender inequality and public policy on the one hand and different dimensions of human development on the other. Over 9,000 researchers worldwide use data from IHDS.

Her research currently examines changes in the nature and composition of Indian middle classes in the context of India’s movement from state-capitalism to market- capitalism and increasing involvement in the global economy.
