Demography goes open access

Storied population research journal now free to all

The journal Demography is now open access: freely available to everyone, even to the public, beginning with volume 58 in 2021. This is great news for PAA’s flagship journal, its authors, and the science published by them.

Lori Delaney of the Carolina Population Center met with the team at Duke University Press and shared this update with MPRC:

Demography is now published by Duke University Press with a new publishing model which “relies entirely on financial support from libraries and research centers.” This support includes the journal’s growing list of Community Partners who provide financial support at an annual amount appropriate to their readership, institution, and budget. Many have pledged up to – and no more than – $500 a year, showing a breadth of support by diverse institutions.

Because of this support, and a key part of the new publishing model, Duke University Press removed APCs (Article Publishing/Processing Charges), the flat fee of $1,500-$3,000 that some publishers charge authors or funders in order to publish an article as open access: immediately after publication, and free to the public forever.
