Sonalde Desai cited in report on India survey differences
Detailing women's work changes employment perspective
Two narratives of joblessness emerge from separate large scale studies in India, according to a recent story in liveMint. Faculty Associate Sonalde Desai pointed out that how questions are worded may impact results, particularly for female employment and labour force participation. Her research shows that when enumerators take care to ascertain various activities performed by different members of the household as opposed to simply asking whether they are employed or not, the estimates for women workers can be strikingly different.
