Cohen post on baby names makes news

Amazon's Alexa platform depresses a favored baby name

Faculty Associate Philip Cohen's post on his influential Family Inequality blog regarding baby name trends (Mary continues to slide) was picked up by numerous outlets, beginning with Business Insider's Kaylee Fagan. Most focused on one of Dr. Cohen's secondary observations: The name Alexa, which was growing in popularity up until 2015 plunged to an unprecedented low, possibly due to the introduction of Amazon's "Alexa" voice-based interface.

She writes, "Cohen summarized the surprising decline by saying, 'You have to feel for people who named their daughters Alexa, and the Alexas themselves, before Amazon sullied their names. Did they not think of the consequences for these people?' "
