About Journal Club with Sonalde Desai
In spite of rapid economic growth and rising education, women’s employment in India declined between 2004-5 and 2011-12, particularly in rural areas. This discussion will draw on a published paper (Chatterjee, Vanneman and Desai, 2018) and on-going work to explore the factors that may explain this decline. Three explanations are examined: (1) Measurement errors in capturing women’s labor market activities; (2) Role of rising incomes and education in women’s withdrawal from the labor forces; and, (3) Lack of job opportunities in rural India.
If possible, please read in advance of Journal Club Meeting: For paper and for NDIC Brief
Note: The Journal Club meeting with Sonalde Desai was originally scheduled for February 20th, but has been rescheduled to April 17th due to inclement weather on the original date.
