Graham Kalton presents "The Past, Present and Future of Social Surveys." This event offers a personal perspective on the developments in survey research since the late 1950's, with a main emphasis on survey sampling. Impressive advances have taken place in all aspects of survey research over this period, many of them facilitated by computers. At the outset, survey designs were simple and response rates were generally high; however, these features no longer hold. The field is now in a state of flux with declining response rates, the growth of web surveys, and the availability of administrative record data and sources of big data. The presentation will end by hazarding some guesses about future directions for the field.
Graham Kalton is Chairman of the Board and Senior Vice President of Westat.
