For this meeting we are glad to have Professor Thurka Sangaramoorthy, from the Department of Anthropology, joining us and bringing her recent work on assessing the potential social impacts of gas production from the Marcellus Shale. The SSM article investigates how residents' perceptions of environmental and health impacts are influenced by fracking in West Virginia. And the PlosONE article proposes a hazard ranking method for systematic evaluation of such a natural gas development project as Marcellus Shale.
These two studies are under a larger project of “Maryland Marcellus Shale Public Health Study”. The project itself is cross-disciplinary and aims to make a multidimensional assessment of Marcellus Shale’s potential impacts on public health, environment, safety, etc. You can find more information on this project at the Marcellus Health website.
All graduate students and faculty are welcome to attend the meeting, which will be held on Friday, February 26 from 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM in room 2101C, Morrill Hall. For more information, please contact Sai Luo or Andrew Williams.
Please note that, at the present time, Morrill Hall is not accessible for handicapped individuals.
