Seed Grant Program

The Seed Grant Program is a crucial mechanism by which we foster population-related research

About the Program

The Seed Grant Program at Maryland has several goals for the development of faculty research:

  1. to facilitate the development of strong individual research proposals, especially NIH and NSF applications
  2. to support junior faculty in proposal development
  3. to encourage faculty in allied fields or faculty who have not previously sought funding from NIH to develop grant proposals
  4. to encourage grant development that involves faculty from more than one discipline
  5. to support high-risk / high-return projects or projects where time-sensitive funding is needed, and
  6. to support research related to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Program Guidelines

Deadlines for 2023-2024 are October 20, 2023 and March 8, 2024. The current Seed Grant Proposal Guidelines are available by reviewing the RFP, which is also available for download.

New : Demographics and Economics of Aging Seed Grant Call

The Maryland Population Research Center invites proposals for projects that will enhance research activity bearing directly on the demography and economics of aging. It is anticipated that two grants of up to $20,000 will be awarded in response to this call, subject to a sufficient number of high-quality proposals being received. The principal aim of this program is to assist in the development of research ideas that have the potential to significantly enhance scientific knowledge in the demography and economics of aging and to garner external research support, particularly R01-level funding from the National Institute of Aging (NIA).

Program Guidelines

The Demographics and Economics of Aging proposal guidelines are available by reviewing the RFP, which is also available for download.

Deadline : March 29, 2024

Rapid-Response "Policy Changes and Public Health Crises" Seed Grant Call

Due to the rapidly evolving environment and the recent Notice of Special Interest call from NICHD  (NOT-HD-22-038: Notice of Special Interest (NOSI)), the Maryland Population Research Center invites seed grant proposals for projects on the Impact of Policy Changes and Emerging and Evolving Public Health Crises on NICHD Populations of Interest. These proposals will be evaluated on an ongoing basis with an expedited turn-around time for reviews, about 2-3 weeks. All of the standard criteria for population related research (see linked call for proposals) will be used to evaluate Rapid Response proposals.

Program Guidelines

The Rapid-Response Seed Grant Proposal Guidelines are available by reviewing the special RFP, which is also available for download. (While similar to the standard Seed Grant guidelines there are significant differences.)

Rolling Deadline - updated January 2024
