NIH Policy Updates

NICHD Population Dynamics Branch

Regina Bures, on behalf of NICHD Population Dynamics Branch, shared the following policy updates in mid-September.

We wanted to share some NIH and NICHD policy reminders and updates. The topics covered in this email areoverlapping applications, the NICHD archiving R03data sharing plans and DSDR, and the pending change in the NIH policies on data sharing and data management.

Overlapping applications. We have recently had inquiries from several applicants about submitting scientifically overlapping applications. Per NIH policy, it is not allowable to have overlapping applications under review at the same time.

NICHD funding for data archiving: A reminder that NICHD has an R03 mechanism that supports data archiving: PAR-20-064 Archiving and Documenting Child Health and Human Development Data Sets (R03 Clinical Trial Not Allowed)

Data sharing plan and DSDR: PDB encourages all applications that propose data collection to include a Data Management and Sharing Plan.  For Data Sharing Plans, we encourage researchers to work with Data Sharing for Demographic Research (DSDR) to share data and/or metadata. DSDR is a specialty archive at ICPSR that is supported by PDB to facilitate the sharing of data collected by PDB grantees.

New NIH Data policies: The Final NIH Policy for Data Management and Sharing will be effective January 25, 2023:

NOT-OD-21-013 – Final NIH Policy for Data Management and Sharing

NOT-OD-21-014 – Supplemental Information to the NIH Policy for Data Management and Sharing: Elements of an NIH Data Management and Sharing Plan

NOT-OD-21-015 – Supplemental Information to the NIH Policy for Data Management and Sharing: Allowable Costs for Data Management and Sharing

NOT-OD-21-016 – Supplemental Information to the NIH Policy for Data Management and Sharing: Selecting a Repository for Data Resulting from NIH-Supported Research
