Carter: "People do still have power"

In light of rapid issuing of executive orders Niambi Carter emphasizes the importance of state and local elections

With Donald Trump’s first few days in office, several executive orders have been passed. In WUSA9, Katie Lusso writes about Faculty Associate Niambi Carter’s comments on the orders. Dr. Carter noted that “while executive orders have the force of law once signed, there are still logistical and legal challenges to implement them,” such as those brought about by checks and balances through Congress and the judicial system.

Dr. Carter acknowledged concerns for individuals feeling overwhelmed by the pace of change from the new administration, and encouraged them to consider how national issues could affect their local communities. “People do still have power, people do still have the ability to influence their local communities. Federal elections, federal government takes a lot of our attention and our time, but state and local government are so important to most of the things we care about. So I would tell people to maybe think about looking around where they can have some influence and where they can make change,” noted Dr. Carter.
