Smith-Bynum highlights mental health challenges for minority children

Mental health issues may be overlooked in kids of color by school professionals

For Mosaic, Amira Sweilem reports that the beginning of the school year can lead to physical and mental health issues arising, particularly for children of color. She highlights Faculty Associate Mia Smith-Bynum's words, where Smith-Bynum states that school professionals may link poor behavior from mental health challenges to racial and ethnic stereotypes. Smith-Bynum points out that a drop in academic performance is a sign that something is going on, adding "these kids are part of the pandemic generation, and there seems to have been a real impact on the social development of kids who spent two and a half years not in school."
