Quynh Nguyen Google Street View data to examine health effects
Writing in AZO Robotics, Lexie Corner reports on a recent study in BMJ Injury Prevention in which Faculty Associate Quynh Nguyen and colleagues utilized Google Street View to identify factors that affect car collisions and cyclist / pedestrian safety. Nguyen noted that for people between 5 to 29 years old, car crashes are the leading cause of death, so it's "crucial to understand how the physical environment can increase or lessen fatal collisions." Nguyen and her colleagues found that places with more sidewalks were associated with a 70% reduction in traffic accidents.
"This research demonstrates the potential of data science and AI to improve public health," highlighted Nguyen.
