Thoma notes a concerning rise in the U.S. infant mortality rate

Rise represents a disturbing directional shift

Faculty Associate Marie Thoma noted a concerning trend regarding the U.S. infant mortality rate in 2022. The CDC published a report that showed a 3% increase in the U.S. infant mortality rate, as well as increases for maternal complications and bacterial meningitis - the two leading causes of infant deaths. Dr. Thoma pointed out that this trend is concerning due to the fact that infant mortality rates are attributed to poverty and inadequate prenatal care, among many other things. "It's going the opposite direction from what it has been," noted Thoma, as the increase is the first statistically significant jump seen in two decades.
