Rendall comments on the future of fertility trends in the United States

MPRC Director Michael Rendall featured on NBC News

Fertility rates in the United States have been decreasing since the 1960s. This trend can be explained by a rise in contraceptive use and social factors, such as a rise in the average age to get married and have children. When families do decide to have children, they are more likely to have fewer children than in the past. Financial concerns, particularly following the economic downturn of 2008, are also likely factors in an individual's decision to put off or postpone having children.

However, MPRC Director Michael Rendall points to the overturning of Roe v. Wade, which allowed for increased restrictions in seeking abortions, as a potential disruptor of the trend. Rendall postulates, "It could be that the overturning of Roe v. Wade will act against the continued decline in birth rate".
