NYT Upshot Blog: "Why Women, but Not Men, Are Judged for a Messy House"

Writing on the upshot blog at the New York Times, Claire Cain Miller notes that women are "still held to a higher social standard, which explains why they’re doing so much housework," according to studies. One of those studies, authored by MPRC alumna Joanna Pepin along with Faculty Associate Liana Sayer and Lynn Casper of the University of Southern California, re-examined assumptions about the home labor loads experienced by single or married women. The study "found that mothers married to men did more housework than single mothers, slept less and had less leisure time," Miller noted. She quotes Joanna Pepin, now at the University of Texas San Antonio, “One possibility is what people believe is expected of them to be a good wife and partner is still really strong, and you’re held to those standards when you’re living with someone,” she said.
