Abraham comments on the quality of work

Share of independent workers drops

Sarah Holder writing for CityLab, reports that there has been a decrease in the share of American workers working for themselves. Contingent-labor-driven-platforms like Uber are confounding the perceived idea that U.S. is “becoming a nation of proverbial Uber drivers”. Research findings, such as those undertaken by Faculty Associate Katherine Abraham, highlight that “there are changes underway in the economy and how people get jobs, but I don’t think it’s a seismic shift,” as Dr. Abraham noted. The issue turns on how the quality of jobs has been degraded, which affects independent workers on getting benefits such as healthcare or unemployment insurance.
