Parker finds significant positive impacts of Mexico's public health program

Demography article details increased likelihood of participation in medical care system

In an article published online in Demography in January 2018 Faculty Associate Susan Parker and colleagues Joseph Saenz and Rebeca Wong examine the impact of the Mexican public health program Seguro Popular, which now reaches 50 million individuals.

Using the longitudinal Mexican Health and Aging Study over the period 2001–2012, the team conducted before and after difference-in-difference matching impact estimators. Their results suggest large and important effects of the Program on utilization and diagnostic tests. The results suggest that, to the extent that health services become more available in rural areas lacking services, effects of health insurance may increase, the scholars write.
