Study finds that the growth of technology startups has slowed

In a Wall Street Journal article titled, "America's Dazzling Tech Boom has a Downside: Not Enough Jobs," faculty associate John Haltiwanger's research helps to demonstrate that the growth of technology startups has declined in recent years. Conducted with colleagues Javier Miranda and Ian Hathaway, the 2014 study shows that while the number of new technology startups grew from 64,000 in 1992 to 113,000 in 2001, it declined to 79,000 in 2011 and has changed little since. As to the causes of this slump in technology startups, Dr. Haltiwanger suggests that global competition and increased domestic regulation may be responsible.
