Wilson comments on the new-found relationship between big polluters and poor communities

Says latest research on ‘hyper-polluters’ can help spearhead more focused policy

A new paper by Dr. Mary Collins, published in Environmental Research Letters, reveals that poor and minority communities are experiencing even more hazardous exposure to industrial pollution from ‘extreme emitters’ than previously predicted.

Faculty associate Sacoby Wilson, who has worked extensively on issues of environmental justice, comments on the implications of this study, “…what it basically is saying is, you don’t have to look at all the different facilities, if you just look at the superpolluters, the ones that release the most chemical emissions, we see that those facilities are also located in communities of color and poor communities.”

Dr. Wilson hopes that the study will prompt the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to undertake more focused campaigns for helping hyper-polluters lessen emissions for the benefit of surrounding communities, and the environment at large.
