About the Presentation

Given the cost of care, lack of complete insurance coverage, and the potential for travel, out of pocket costs for abortion can be high, leaving many patients unable to afford the care they seek. In response, philanthropic organizations called Abortion Funds (AFs) have, since the 1970s, provided financial assistance for care provision and practical support. Today, AFs play a significant role in abortion provision, reporting over $3.6 million in patient assistance in 2022. We create the first comprehensive data set with information on the operation of more than 100 individual AFs, including annual revenues, from 2009 to 2023. We measure how public events (such as policy changes) affect donations to these organizations, and examine whether it is shocks to abortion access or simply increased social salience that drives these changes.
