About the presentation:
High Schools, the Prison-Industrial Complex, and the Pursuit of Safety and Security
The continued threat of school violence along with an aggressive surveillance technology industry has led K-12 schools to greatly expand their use of security. This comparative case study of four high schools in a large, diversifying suburban district investigates differences in security across schools and whether/how these differences map onto differences in how administrators, teachers, and students describe their experiences in the school. We examine these differences overall, by the demographics of the school, and racial identity of participants. We identify how these patterns do and do not follow quantitative secondary data through a mixed methods matrix analysis approach. The study aims to contribute to the understanding of school security as part of the prison-industrial complex in order to inform policies on school security and surveillance.
