About the Presentation

We study the impact of temperature on productivity and on-the-job
learning using fine-grained data from workers employed for a data-entry task. Not only is productivity reduced by 1.6% per degree Celsius, higher temperatures also reduce future productivity by inhibiting productivity growth. These dynamic effects are large, roughly doubling the net effect of higher temperatures, and are particularly strong for workers without relevant experience. These effects are likely to become increasingly important with global shifts towards knowledge work, which relies more heavily on learning on-the-job.
