About the Presentation
What counts as family? Documenting how the public understands family shifts is essential for sociologists and demographers as they need to recenter and adjust the scope of their work. Using data about family definitions from five surveys fielded from 2003 to 2020 in the United States, we show both stability and change in family definitions. The nationwide accessibility of marriage equality may have complicated where people draw the line between families and non-families. Despite clear trends towards more inclusive definitions of family, a sizeable group retains narrow views of what counts as family. This possible polarization might pose difficulties for both family sociologists as well as demographers.
About the Speaker
Dr. Geist's research interests fall into three broad categories: 1) the association between attitudes, economic circumstances, and health and family formation and family planning; 2) the social construction of family, gender, and sexuality, and 3) gender inequality as it relates to the intersection of family and work.
