About the Presentation

Socially marginalized populations are disproportionately exposed to neighborhood violence and tend to have pregnancies at younger ages than do others. In this study, I investigate a potential causal link between exposure to nearby homicides and young adult pregnancy, and further explore a range of underlying behavioral and psychosocial pathways. To overcome the issue of endogeneity, I draw on georeferenced weekly survey data from a panel of young women in Flint, Michigan and compare the same women to themselves in weeks when homicides did and did not occur within a quarter-mile of their homes.
