About the Presentation

Existing research about care work focuses on specific kinds of care, such as unpaid childcare in families or paid care work for older adults. This segmentation limits our understanding about how and why the provision of care as a whole is shifting. This study uses American Heritage Time Use Survey (AHTUS), the American Time Use Survey (ATUS), and the Current Population Survey (CPS) to develop a fully integrated analysis about the care work system and examine how the marketization, feminization, and racialization of care work has changed over half a century.

About the Speaker

Pilar Gonalons-Pons

Pilar Gonalons-Pons is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Sociology at the University of Pennsylvania. She uses quantitative methods and cross-national comparative data to examine how work, families, and public policies structure economic inequalities, with a particular focus on the organization and gendering of care work, both paid and unpaid. Her studies contribute to debates about the uneven pace of change in gender inequalities, the role of family processes in exacerbating inequalities, and the relevance of public policies mediating these processes.
