About the Presentation

The COVID-19 pandemic has altered numerous social dynamics, and there is concern about whether this has led to greater problems in relationships,  including increased verbal conflict and intimate partner violence. Using data from the Toledo Adolescent Relationships Study (n = 500), collected pre-pandemic and during the pandemic and controlling for fixed differences between individuals, we analyzed the relationship between changes in economic circumstances, parenthood, substance use, relationship quality, and mental health and changes in verbal and physical conflict. We found that, on average, verbal conflict increased and physical violence declined during the pandemic. Yet, some individuals changed from no intimate partner violence into a pattern of violent interactions. Economic hardship, substance use, relationship uncertainty, stress and depression led to these changes in relationship functioning. As the negative effects of the pandemic persist in terms of stress, depression, economic hardship and substance use, we anticipate more problematic relationship dynamics.
