About the Presentation for the Fall MPRC Online Seminar Series

Death at the very start of life is disproportionately common in the large, disadvantaged states of north India.  We document a new mortality puzzle.  Despite the depiction of public facilities in policy debates, neonatal mortality is much higher in private than public hospitals in Uttar Pradesh and Bihar — especially after accounting for the fact that births in public hospitals tend to be from disadvantaged families.  We present a collage of evidence on alternative explanations, and conclude that the most likely cause is the practice of healthcare in these private facilities.
