About the Presentation

The concept of the second demographic transition (SDT) has been widely criticized for its weak empirical underpinning. In this paper, I test the statistical properties of the existing SDT ideational and behavioural indices and propose new ones. The new indices are constructed by applying factor analysis on four waves of the European Values Study (1990, 1999, 2008 and 2017) and country-level demographic indicators available from Eurostat and Human Fertility Database. Their explanatory power is tested with OLS regression models. I find the new indices to outperform the existing ones. The SDT clearly consists of several behavioural and ideational dimensions, changing over time at different pace and in different directions, sometimes reversing the direction. Thus, the SDT assumption of irreversibility and unilinearity clearly needs to be revisited.
