About the Workshop

This 90 minute workshop provides a brief overview of the IPUMS Time Use archive, and provides hands-on examples in using IPUMS Time Use data to explore time spent alone and time spent with others. Spending more time alone is associated with negative health outcomes and lower levels of social capital. Our goal for this workshop is to promote awareness of and expertise using IPUMS Time Use data, with the following specific objectives:

• Overview of IPUMS Time Use.
• Overview of available data.
• Guided tour of IPUMS Time Use.
• Hands-on analysis of IPUMS Time Use data.

About the Speakers

Liana C. Sayer is Professor of Sociology, Faculty Affiliate of the Maryland Population Research Center, and Director, Maryland Time Use Laboratory, at the University of Maryland. Sayer’s research examines how women’s and men’s paid work, household and care work, and leisure time vary over time, place, and generation, and how these patterns are linked with changes in family, workplaces, policies, and values.

Kelsey Drotning is a PhD student in the Sociology department and Student Affiliate of the Maryland Population Research Center at the University of Maryland. Drotning studies discrimination, isolation, and inequality at the intersection of race, gender, and family. Her current work examines how marriage and employment differentially shape how much time people spend alone by sex and race.
