About the Presentation

Life course research has long examined impact of military service and combat exposure on life trajectories. Similarly, a large literature has emerged documenting the long-term effects of early life exposures to adverse social and environmental conditions. This project examines the mechanisms through which childhood exposure to armed conflict affects health in later life. Utilizing data from the Survey of Health and Retirement in Europe (SHARE) linked to historical military conflict data from WWII we examine how the timing of exposure to armed conflict during childhood influences the magnitude of its impact on later life health and the pathways through which it manifests. Results suggests that the impact of childhood exposure to war and the pathways through which it manifest varies substantially depending on the timing at which it occurs.

About the Speaker

Steven Haas

Steven Haas’ research addresses questions that lie at the intersection of social stratification, and the demography of health and aging. In particular his research investigates health as both a cause and a consequence of the social stratification process with particular interests in the processes that produce health disparities over the life course. Prior research projects have explored the relative contribution of early life versus adult factors in determining of trajectories of aging and disability, and the mechanisms linking adolescent health to educational outcomes and labor market success.
