About the Presentation

Using five years of administrative data (2010-2015) from two adjoining school districts in the Baltimore area, we build a network of elementary schools where the ties are formed by student mobility. We then community detection algorithms and gravity models to treat school transfer as a complex, two-stage decision process. Relative academic performance and socioeconomic differences matter substantially more in the models that take the segmented landscape into account than in the naïve models.
