About the Presentation
Using the HIV Prevention Trials Network 061 (HPTN 061) cohort of black MSM and the Project 18 (P18) Cohorts 1 and 2 of minority MSM, we are currently evaluating longitudinal associations between multiple levels of CJI (stop-and-frisk, arrest, incarceration) and STI/HIV risk outcomes (e.g., sexual risk behaviors, STI, HIV, and viral load). We describe the potential mediating roles of CJI-related disruption of social support networks, stigma, poverty, and resulting depression and substance use.
About the Speaker
Maria Khan, Ph.D., M.P.H. is an Associate Professor of Epidemiology in the Department of Population Health at the New York University School of Medicine. Dr. Khan completed her B.A. in Sociology at Swarthmore College, M.P.H. in Maternal and Child Health and Ph.D. in Epidemiology with pre-doctoral training in Demography at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and her post-doctoral training in drug dependence at the National Development and Research Institutes in New York City. Dr. Khan’s research examines social and behavioral determinants of the US sexually transmitted infection (STI) and HIV epidemics with recent work focused on the nexus of mass incarceration, addictions, and STI/HIV.
