About the Presentation

Incarceration disproportionately affects socially and economically marginalized segments of the U.S. population, including those more likely to be in poor health. In particular, infectious diseases such as HIV and Hepatitis-C (HCV) are more often observed in currently and formerly incarcerated populations.  Although each disease can be fatal, death is preventable with treatment. Unfortunately, screening and treatment are inconsistent in correctional settings and being incarcerated can interrupt existing treatment, threatening the health of patients as well as the communities in which they are embedded.  This study addresses a pressing need to understand challenges in the continuity of care among formerly incarcerated persons with HIV or HCV. Using in-depth interviews with 30 patients and 10 care providers, we explore the treatment challenges confronted by formerly incarcerated persons with HIV or HCV as well as the challenges confronted by those who provide care for this population.
