About the Presentation

Dr. Lindberg is leading a multi-year project to improve the reporting of abortion in surveys of US women. Even though abortion is legal in the US, abortion remains a highly sensitive, stigmatized and thus difficult-to-measure behavior.  Dr. Lindberg will present results from a study that estimates abortion underreporting for three recent major national surveys in the United States –the National Survey of Family Growth 2006 -2015, the National Longitudinal Survey of Youth 1997 and the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent to Adult Health. Patterns of reporting by individual characteristics, survey mode, question design and length of retrospective reporting are examined. The study also uses Monte Carlo simulations to estimate the extent to which underreporting may bias studies of the relationship between abortion and other variables. Implications regarding how pervasive underreporting of abortion in our nation’s surveys compromises the study of abortion and fertility more generally will also be discussed.

About the Speaker

Laura Lindberg

Laura Lindberg is a Principal Research Scientist at the Guttmacher Institute, where her work focuses on the measurement of trends, determinants and consequences of fertility-related behaviors of the US population, particularly among adolescents.  She currently is PI of an NICHD grant to improve survey measurement of abortion.  Other recent research includes measurement of unintended pregnancy and its consequences, and the development of innovative methodologies and measures of pregnancy risk. Her newest NIH project will estimate improved contraceptive failure rates for the US using a Bayesian approach.  Dr. Lindberg also engages in policy-relevant research on sex education.  Dr. Lindberg received her B.A. from Princeton University, and her M.A. and Ph.D. from the University of Michigan's Sociology Department specializing in demography.
