About the Presentation

Urban food insecurity amongst low income communities in Africa has received increasing attention because of its impact on maternal and child health. Kin based support networks and linkages to rural communities have always served as social safety nets in economically vulnerable populations. In this presentation, I draw on two related datasets from an informal settlement in Nairobi, Kenya to 1) describe what urban food insecurity looks like; 2) analyze the relationship between rural connectivity and household level food insecurity and 3) examine the role of transfers of support amongst kin in mitigating food insecurity. Results suggest strong protective effects of rural connectivity and benefits from different types of transfers among kin.
