This workshop highlights similarities and differences in how families shape children’s outcomes across contexts. Panelists will each briefly explain how their research speaks to the question of whether/how context shapes the effect of family variables on children’s well-being, and ensuing discussion will be focused on how research from various contexts (countries at different levels of socioeconomic development, various groups within countries) expand our knowledge of how family arrangements impact children’s well-being.

Outcomes include school enrollments and transitions to adulthood; contexts include a wide variety of low- and lower-middle-income countries as well as China, South Korea, South Africa, and the United State; our collective work includes both family structure variables and family process variables.
