This special workshop will feature researchers from the Early Indicators Union Army project, a longitudinal life-cycle study of Union Army recruits. Union Army data and Historical Urban GIS data sets enable data users to investigate a variety of research areas including migration and social mobility, aging, health and retirement. These economic, health, military and demographic data are sourced from military and pension records, health examinations and the U.S. Federal Census. Population samples include white northern soldiers, African Americans, prisoners of war, recruits enlisting in the largest U.S. cities and veterans surviving to age 95. Data is freely available at UAdata.org.
