Title of Talk

Early Life Experiences and Health Over the Life Course

About the Talk

Children exposed to social adversity carry a greater risk of poor physical and mental health into adulthood. Identification of the mechanisms and moderators that connect early life adversity to chronic disease is an urgent public health priority, given that this information can be used to inform interventions to (1) promote health over the life course, and (2) address disparities in health by race/ethnicity and socioeconomic status. I will present several epidemiologic studies to describe the distribution of childhood adversities in the United States, and the relationship between early life adversity and risk biomarkers for cardiovascular disease, the leading cause of death worldwide. The presentation will conclude with a discussion of directions for future research and potential implications of this field of research for public health practice and policy.

Please note that, at the present time, Morrill Hall is not accessible for handicapped individuals.
