About the Talk

Recent research has shown that in highly developed countries with fertility around replacement level, recent fertility re-increases came hand in hand with increases in female employment. We investigate how far the positive link between fertility and female employment holds on a micro level. By mobilizing longitudinal data from the European Survey of Income and Living conditions, we find that being in stable employment is associated with a higher probability for women to decide in favour of a child. Our analysis focuses on the arrival of a second child, as we find that differences in completed fertility across European countries mainly emerge in the transition from the first to the second child. Our results suggest that a secure economic environment, created by stable employment positions for both parents, is a crucial condition for family enlargement.
