About the Talk

Throughout sub-Saharan Africa young women are at incredibly high risk of HIV infection. Young women face multiple risk factors which increase their risk of infection. Importantly, structural factors such as poverty and lack of education increase young women's risk. Despite the importance of structural factors, to date there has been a paucity of interventions aimed at addressing them. Cash transfers provided to young women have shown promise in reducing HIV risk. Dr. Pettifor will review evidence on structural factors for HIV risk among young women in SSA, discuss the evidence on cash transfers for HIV prevention and describe one such trial that she is PI of in South Africa exploring the effect of cash transfers conditional on school attendance with the aim of reducing HIV risk in young women.
